Carbon 180

Carbon180 is a new breed of climate-focused NGO that partners with policymakers, scientists, and businesses around the globe to build a world that removes more carbon than it emits. In 2020, we are building a nonpartisan think-and-do tank to change U.S. policy on carbon removal. We conduct policy research and analysis, build coalitions of industry and civil society stakeholders to advocate for policy change, and work with policymakers to advance effective and equitable policy for carbon removal. We collaborate with leading academic researchers on carbon removal to ensure our policy proposals are grounded in the best science. Carbon180 has a clear, ambitious-yet-attainable roadmap for scaling carbon removal.

Clear goals:

  • Long-term (i.e. mid century): build an economy that removes more carbon than we emit (removing 10Bs tons CO2 annually)

  • Mid-term (i.e. 2030): enable carbon removal solutions to reach the 1Bs tons CO2 removal annual scale

  • Short-term (i.e. our roadmap for the next decade):

    • Change policy to provide:

      • $Bs for innovation funding

      • $10Bs in industry-specific incentives to catalyze projects

    • Spur investment by supporting entrepreneurs to launch dozens of new startups that can raise the $100Ms in equity and $100Bs in project finance needed to scale

    • Motivate $10Ms/year in new philanthropic grants to build expand the carbon removal advocacy coalitions

An innovative strategy based on:

  • Changing policy in the US. We design and implement nonpartisan, industry-specific policy changes that support emerging carbon removal research and business efforts and build invested political constituencies that enable greater ambition in the future. Our work involves policy analysis and design, coalition building and policymaker education and outreach, and fellowships to train the next generation of leaders.

  • Catalyzing business action. We support entrepreneurs to launch new businesses with large-scale carbon removal potential and clear near-term go-to-market pathways. With our “entrepreneur in residence” fellowship program, we connect entrepreneurs with our network of technical experts, investors, large corporations, and policymakers to enable the entrepreneurs to have greater success scaling companies -- and to in turn unlock more investment in carbon removal from public and private sector stakeholders.

  • Grounding action in science. We partner with leading researchers across disciplines to enable policy and business stakeholder to design and implement the most effective carbon removal initiatives
