Soil Generation

SG is a Black & Brown-led coalition of gardeners, farmers, individuals, and community-based organizations working to ensure people of color regain community control of land and food, address community health concerns, grow food, and improve the environment. They are practitioners and teachers of agroecology. Following a collective ownership model, SG values their relationships to each other and soil above wealth. Their local work around Philadelphia during the pandemic has included farm brigades, helping 9 different community gardens and farms with on-farm labor and support. In addition, SG distributed small community grants for garden projects and provided assistance for 13 different projects across the city, as well as their member organizations. They recently released their Agroecology from the People manual, which outlines the technical, political, and cultural dimensions of agroecology, from the Soil Generation context. As part of the CJA’s land reclamation campaign being driven by our food sovereignty working group and Reinvest in Our Power working group, SG is working to acquire additional land as part of their “Free the Land” campaign.
